BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The National Education Association (“NEA”) launched Read Across America in 1998, in celebration of reading. Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel. Dr. Seuss was a celebrated American children’s author.
The titles and resources featured by NEA’s Read Across America include books that students can see themselves reflected in, as well as books that allow readers to see a world or a character that might be different than them. When provided with opportunities to broaden our perspectives, it opens up the door to creating a more inclusive world.
Across the nation, teachers, librarians, parents, and community leaders develop Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Dr. Seuss once wrote, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Today, may we celebrate the power that is unleashed by reading.
