BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
The Lodi City Council appropriated $500,000 for an art installation anticipated to be placed at Interstate 5 and Thornton Road (near Flag City) at its April 20, 2022, regular meeting. Lodi’s cultural history will be celebrated through an art installation for citizens and visitors as they enter the City. There are many benefits to an art installation, including its location in a public atmosphere (not confined to a museum or building), its enrichment to the City’s streetscapes, lending itself to civic engagement, providing artists with professional opportunities, boosting local economy by creating an attraction to visitors, showing an investment to the City by celebrating Lodi’s livability and love-ability, boosting community pride, and connecting neighbors through a shared history.
The Lodi Art’s Commission accepted a presentation by Jagged Edge Metal Art (“Artist”) on February 14, 2024, wherein artists Terrence and Mari Martin provided a look at their final proposal for the conceptual design of a grape sculpture. The Commission found the proposed design favorable and recommended that the City Council approve the proposal.
Upon City Council’s approval of selected Artist and design, the City shall work with the Artist on the final design in substantial conformity with the current proposal, and subsequently enter into an agreement with the Artist to proceed with the project in a form approved by the City Attorney. The forthcoming agreement will be for the design, fabrication and installation of the artwork upon the City’s final chosen location and will include at a minimum:
• Plan view - artwork’s relationship to immediate environment
• Elevation view - intended physical appearance, scale and form
• Image view - to show important details and/or surface treatments
• Photo simulation
• Timeline and schedules
• Budget estimates
• Maintenance
