BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Officer Wellness and Mental Health (“Officer Wellness”) Grant Program, established in the 2022 Budget Act (Assembly Bill 178, Chapter 45, Statutes of 2022), provides $50 million for city and county law enforcement agencies for the purpose of improving officer wellness and expanding mental health sources. The funding may be used for any of the following purposes:

•                     Establishing or expanding officer wellness units

•                     Establishing or expanding peer support units

•                     Services provided by a licensed mental health professional, counselor or other professional that works with law enforcement

•                     Expanding multiagency mutual aid programs focused on officer wellness and mental health

•                     Other programs and services that are evidence-based or have a successful track record of enhancing officer wellness

The Lodi Police Department received $47,741.62 from the Officer Wellness grant in FY2023 through a direct allocation.  The Police Department has decided to utilize the funds to upgrade the Police Department gym for staff. The existing gym equipment is outdated and does not have the apparatus for contemporary workout methods.

Research shows that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional wellbeing, and lower rates of mental illness. Taking up exercise reduces the risk of developing mental illness. Exercise also helps in treating some mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety. Having access to the equipment onsite allows all staff the availability to work out anytime at no cost.

Staff recommends the appropriation of $47,471.62 for the Officer Wellness Grant.
