BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that day falls as Police Week.

National Police Week honors the service and sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty, and the more than 800,000 active law enforcement officers who protect our communities and safeguard our democracy across America. Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1786, more than 24,000 law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice.

The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. This includes one of our own dedicated sworn members of the Lodi Police Department, Motor Officer Rick Charles Cromwell. Officer Cromwell died as a result of a motorcycle collision that occurred on Kettleman Lane while on duty on December 9, 1998. May 13, 2025, will mark 26 years of Officer Cromwell’s name being engraved on the National Memorial.

During this week, we recognize and honor those who have fallen in the line of duty and extend appreciation to the officers who continue to serve our communities with integrity and professionalism. The Lodi Police Department has 74 sworn police officers, corporals, sergeants, lieutenants, captains, and the Chief of Police. These men and women face risks and challenges with courage, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to public service, often risking their own safety to protect others.

The Police Department requests that the City Council proclaim May 11-17, 2025, as “Police Week” and publicly salute the service of Officer Cromwell, law enforcement officers in our community, and communities across the nation.
