BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Lodi Police Department is dedicated to enhancing public safety and maintaining a strong presence in the downtown area through community-oriented policing. An electric bike will improve the mobility, visibility, and responsiveness of police officers patrolling on bikes, foster community engagement, and offer an environmentally friendly alternative to motor vehicles.

The department has been offered an electric bike through a donation by F&M Bank and the Lodi Police Foundation, valued at $3,655.40. Electric bikes are used by law enforcement agencies across the country due to their reliability and performance.

Having an electric bike patrol officer in the downtown area provides numerous benefits. It enables officers to navigate crowded areas, alleys, sidewalks, and pedestrian-only zones where patrol cars cannot go, making them ideal for dense downtown environments with heavy foot traffic. Officers on bicycles enhance their visibility in high-traffic areas, helping to deter theft, vandalism, and other street-level crimes by being seen and active.

The electric bike will be maintained under existing department vehicle protocols. Training will be provided to officers to ensure safe and effective operation. This new addition will enhance the department’s patrol capabilities and improve officer efficiency in specific environments.

STRATEGIC VISION:

7G. Public Safety: High levels of community involvement by public safety employees.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no cost to the general budget with the acceptance of this donation. The only funding required will be for the ongoing maintenance of the electric bike.
