BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as National Police Week. National Police Week honors the service and sacrifice of those law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty and the more than 800,000 active law enforcement officers protecting our communities and safeguarding each citizen's civil liberties across America.

Since the first known line-of-duty death in 1786, 26,577 law enforcement officers have made the ultimate sacrifice; the names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. This includes one of our own dedicated sworn members of the Lodi Police Department, Motor Officer Rick Charles Cromwell. Officer Cromwell died as a result of a motorcycle collision that occurred on Kettleman Lane while on duty on Dec. 9, 1998. May 13, 2024, will mark 25 years of Officer Cromwell's name being engraved on the National Memorial.

The Lodi Police Department currently has 76 sworn police officers, corporals, sergeants, lieutenants, captains, and the Chief of Police. These 76 sworn personnel work diligently to leverage available resources and partnerships to enhance their ability to provide top-quality service; they build and strengthen relationships with citizens to effectively address crime and social issues in the City of Lodi.
