body
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
During National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, we recognize the men and women who dispatch our police forces. Although they are not as visible as the men and women who arrive at the scene of emergencies, they are equally crucial to the safety and level of service provided to our community.
Every day public safety telecommunicators answer calls for assistance, dispatch them to the city’s police department, and facilitate the coordination of law enforcement operations in our city.
We depend on public safety telecommunicators to promptly, clearly, and calmly notify emergency personnel. We rely on them to keep our loved ones calm and assured in an emergency. We trust their guidance and support in our most frantic and panicked moments.
The Lodi Police Department has 12 dispatchers/jailers, two lead dispatchers and two dispatch supervisors, all of whom work 8 to 12-hour shifts. Lodi is one of the very few departments in the state where dispatchers not only staff the Communications Center for business and 911 calls but also serve as jailers, booking, processing, and providing care for inmates. Several dispatchers are also cross-trained to work special assignments, including assisting the Property Clerk, acting as Field Evidence Technicians, members of the Hostage Negotiations Team, and Tactical Dispatch.
