BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
During Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week, we recognize the men and women who dedicate themselves to protecting both the public and animals. Like other law enforcement professionals, Animal Services Control Officers and shelter personnel serve with compassion and commitment to ensure the safety of pets, people, and wildlife.
Every day, Animal Services Officers answer calls for assistance in our communities. They secure roaming and/or dangerous dogs, rescue animals in danger, investigate situations of alleged animal abuse and neglect, transport injured animals to veterinary hospitals for care, regularly educate pet owners about responsible pet care, and mediate disputes between neighbors regarding their pets.
Shelter personnel perform critical daily responsibilities that directly impact animal health and well-being. These include assessing and monitoring animals that are sick or injured, providing food and fresh water, administering medications and treatments, maintaining clean and sanitary enclosures, and ensuring animals receive attentive, humane care while awaiting adoption or to reunite with their families.
Animal Care and Control Appreciation Week is observed nationally to recognize the commitment, professionalism, and often challenging work performed by these individuals. This week provides an opportunity to acknowledge their efforts in protecting both residents and animals, often under demanding and unpredictable conditions.
