BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, resulting in the gradual loss of voluntary muscle movement. There is currently no known cause, prevention, or cure.

Approximately 5,000 Americans are diagnosed with ALS each year, including retired Lodi Police Officer Chuck Fromm, who served the community for 28 years before retiring in 2007, and passed away in March 2026 following a courageous battle with ALS.

ALS affects individuals of all backgrounds and has a significant impact on patients, families, and caregivers. Veterans are at an increased risk of developing ALS, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recognizes ALS as a service-connected disease.

ALS Awareness Month helps increase public understanding of the disease, honors those affected, and supports continued research efforts toward treatment and a cure.
